Sargent Shriver H '67 with Fr. Yanitelli
- Description:
- R. Sargent Shriver Jr. (second from left) was awarded an honorary degree at the 1967 commencement and gave the keynote speech at the ceremony at Roosevelt Stadium. Shriver was an early opponent of World War II but volunteered for the U.S. Navy once America entered the war, saying he had a duty to serve his country even though he disagreed with its policies. This was the 35th honorary degree for the architect and first director and driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps. Shriver also created the Office of Economic Opportunity, Head Start, VISTA, Job Corps, and the Special Olympics, just to name a few. He also served as the U.S. ambassador to France before running for vice president on George McGovern's ticket in 1972. Shriver was married to Eunice Kennedy, a sister of Pres. John F. Kennedy.
