The actress Helen Hayes, regarded by many as the First Lady of the American Theater, was scheduled to receive an honorary degree and to address the graduates at the commencement in June, but fell ill. President Yanitelli made a special presentation of the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters a few months later at a Sunday Mass in St. Ann’s Church in Nyack on May 25, 1975, with hundreds of neighbors in attendance.
